ASCSA SUMMER SESSIONS, 2012

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens announces its Summer Sessions for 2012. The two six-week sessions are designed for those who wish to become acquainted with Greece and its antiquities, and to improve their understanding of the relationship among the monuments, landscape, and climate of the country and its history, literature, and culture.

Enrollment is open to North American graduate and advanced undergraduate students and to high school and college instructors of classics and related subjects. Each session is limited to twenty participants.

Roughly half of each session is spent in travel throughout Greece. Three trips of varying duration give the participant an introduction to the major archaeological sites and museum collections in North and Central Greece, the Peloponnese, and Crete. The remainder of the session is devoted to study of the museums and monuments of Athens and the surrounding area with day trips to such sites as Marathon, Sounion, and Eleusis. Each participant will usually present two “on-site” oral reports on assigned topics. The program is demanding, both physically and intellectually.

Fees for the 2012 program are $4,250. This includes tuition, room for the entire six-week period, partial board in Athens, travel within Greece, and museum and site fees. International airfare, some meals, and incidental expenses are the participant's responsibility. Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships through the School. They are awarded on the basis of academic merit. Consult the ASCSA website for a list of scholarships funded by the School and other agencies.

The Directors for the 2012 Summer Sessions are Session I (June 11 through July 25): Professor Bella Vivante, University of Arizona; Session II (June 18 through August 1): Professor Timothy F. Winters, Austin Peay State University.

Scholarships Awarded Through ASCSA

To apply for ASCSA scholarships, indicate your preferences by checking the appropriate box on the ASCSA Summer Sessions Application. No additional forms are required.

Open Scholarships

The American School awards approximately five open scholarships, normally to graduate students enrolled in programs that focus on Greek and/or Latin languages and literature, ancient history, ancient philosophy or Classical art and archaeology. Funding is restricted to graduate students, who at the time of application, are enrolled at Cooperating Institutions of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

Amount: ALL FEES

The Charles M. Edwards Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding applicant, normally an exceptional undergraduate.

Amount: $500

Rea Silvia Borza Scholarship

The Borza fellowship is reserved for a high school teacher in history, art, literature or some other field whose career would be enhanced by a summer’s study at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.  Preference will be given to teachers in public high schools.

Amount: $1,500

Katherine Keene Scholarship

This scholarship is endowed by Katherine Keene, a retired teacher and ASCSA Summer Sessions alumna.  It is awarded to a public high school teacher who teaches Social Studies or has shown interest in aspects of the Classics, and has been able to include that material in his/her offerings.

Antony and Isabelle Raubitschek Scholarship

Scholarship, endowed by an alumnus of the School and friends, in honor of the late Professor Antony Raubitschek of Stanford University and Isabelle Raubitschek.

Amount: $2,000

Scholarships Awarded Through Other Organizations

Please apply to BOTH the ASCSA and the sponsoring organization.  N.B.: An ASCSA Summer Session Scholarship may not be held in conjunction with any other full scholarship. 

Semple Award of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South

Members of CAMWS who are either secondary school Greek or Latin teachers in the CAMWS territory or graduate students in a degree-granting program in Classics in the CAMWS territory are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Amount: $3,500.

Deadline: January 31, 2012.

Arthur Patch McKinlay Scholarships of the American Classical League

The applicant must have been a member of the ACL for the preceding three years, plus current academic year, and must be planning to teach Classics at the elementary or secondary school level during the 2012/2013 school year.  College/university teachers are not eligible. Amount: up to $1,500.  Deadline: January 15, 2012.

Eta Sigma Phi Summer Scholarship for the ASCSA Summer Sessions

Members and alumni of Eta Sigma Phi who have received a Bachelor’s degree within eight years prior to application (or shall have received it by June 1st of the current year) and who have not received a doctoral degree are eligible to apply for this scholarship.  In selecting the winner, the Committee will give attention to the quality of the applicant’s work in Greek and Latin, intention to teach at the secondary school or college level, and contribution to the activities of Eta Sigma Phi at the local and national levels. Amount: $2,125 for ASCSA fees and an additional stipend of $875 toward travel expenses (ASCSA pays half of all fees, $2,125). Deadline: February 1, 2012.

New York Classical Club ASCSA Summer Session Scholarship

This is a special opportunity for NYCC Club members to win a scholarship of $4,500 toward the cost of study in the summer session of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. All members in the third consecutive year of paid membership in the Club are eligible to apply for the award, although preference will be given to secondary school teachers and graduate students. Deadline: January 15, 2012.

CANE Endowment Scholarship

Members of the Classical Association of New England and have been members in good standing for two years or more are eligible.  Public and private pre-collegiate teachers are eligible. Preference, however, is given to secondary school teachers and residents of New England. Amount: $5,100.  Please note that $4,250 of the award goes to the ASCSA for tuition, partial room and board, and travel within Greece required for the program.  Deadline: February 1, 2012.

E. Adelaide Hahn Scholarships of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States

In honor of E. Adelaide Hahn, two awards of up to $6,000 each will be made in the spring toward the cost of study in the ASCSA summer session. Applicants must have been CAAS members in good standing for two consecutive years prior to the year in which they apply. Preference will be given to pre-college teachers, graduate students, and those who have not previously received this award. Applicants who receive the Fulbright cannot receive the Hahn; applicants can receive up to $4,000 if they have been given another award. Scholarship winners are expected to report on their summer study at the CAAS annual meeting in October. Deadline: February 10, 2012.

Educational Seminars:  2012 Greece Classics Summer Seminar

Awards are available through the Educational Seminars Program, funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foundation of Greece and implemented by American Councils for International Education. Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens and full-time high school or college teachers with at least 3 years of experience who are currently teaching Greek, Latin, Ancient Studies or the Classics.

The grant includes: international airfare; the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) tuition including room and board and travel within Greece; a pre-program virtual orientation online; a post-program debrief in Washington, DC; a stipend to defray the cost of local transportation, meals and other incidental expenses not covered by the ASCSA fees; and funds to purchase and ship classroom materials. Grantees are responsible for any additional personal expenses. Deadline: Friday, January 6, 2012.
